Bibles and coats

Hermano Rafael recently handed out some tracts and coats to the children in the colonias of Nuevo Laredo. In his last email to us, he said this... "thanks for your help and support to our ministry with bibles, new testaments and specially with this bible material for kids, they loved it". He also said there are still many children who need a winter jacket, so we are looking forward to getting our shipment of coats from Vriesland Reformed in Michigan.

Christmas reflection...

Written by Roberto A. Gomez - our chief (and much appreciated) volunteer.

CHRISTMAS SEASON 12/2011
It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas ... well, not in all places. This year the economic trends in the U.S. did not improve much. Hence, in a season where finances play an important part in the pursuit of happiness for security in: shelter, food, family, and employment, such has not been the case. Hence, there is a need for which some people are beginning to wake up to; a need for the divine interventions from God.

Many years ago, the people of God began to hold on to a hope of a coming King, a liberator of captors; Christ Jesus. He was spoken off from many years before His birth. He was presented with many titles; amongst those was "Prince of Peace". Yet the most memorable and impactive is "Emmanuel", that is "God with us". In some miraculous manner, God came down to Earth in the form of Christ Jesus. It was through Christ Jesus that God presented a pure form of Himself as a means from which to liberate people from their greatest captor, sin.

As a captor, sin is very unique; it even affects a person's perspective. From one point of view, it presents itself as both pleasant and impulsive temptation(s), (e.g. you have to have or do it now). However, as time passes by, it can progressively grab a hold of you, and then take you in by its captive control; you won't see it coming. From the second point of view, you are not immune from sin, but you are granted both the authority and power, through Christ Jesus, to take a stand against both the temptations and captive power of sin. Regardless of the perspective you may be coming from, there is one answer for initial and continual liberation from sin, Christ Jesus. The sacrificial blood of Christ Jesus washes and cleanses the soul from sin. Christ Jesus is the only means by which to be cleansed from sin, but also draw near to God. Should you choose to remain free from the captivity of sin, then you must begin by establishing a relationship with Christ Jesus. Secondly, you must maintain that relationship by striving to carry out your way of life by means of the instructions God has set out in the Bible. As you set out to do so, you will face opposition, and many forms of troubles. However, be of good cheer, Christ Jesus will help you and provide for all of your needs for He has "overcome the world".

For many years, I was caught up in the excitement of the "Christmas Spirit". It used to mean a time of giving and receiving gifts, having big meals with friends and family, but also attending or participating in a Christmas program at a local church. However, it was not until the age of twenty-one, the year that I was liberated by Christ Jesus, that I began the journey of learning a fuller and more profound meaning of Christmas. Now, at the age of thirty-five, I hold a new personal meaning for the Christmas season. It is a season for which I commemorate the narrative of the people that God chose for the coming of Christ Jesus. They were ordinary people who were chosen by God but also held both humble and obedient hearts towards Him and His written Word. The state of their heart continues with me to this day, for it sets forth a standard of expectation that God's desire for the state of my own heart in obedience unto Him and servitude to those He has called me to serve.

In closing, this year the economy has not been too well for everyone. Some people are facing diverse forms of hardship. Yet in the mist of this onset of times of hardship, there is a reason for which to arise and rejoice. The reason is God's greatest gift to the world: the gift of liberation from sin through Christ Jesus.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Christmas in the park

Yesterday we worshiped outdoors in the park in downtown Laredo. Pastor Brent spoke (and we sang) of Immanuel. “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.” Matt. 1:23

Hermano Juan Jose

His "day" job is security for the local school system, but Saturday night, he DJs for a Christian radio station in Nuevo Laredo (Radio33) Juan is the definition of what it means to "let your light shine", it's always a joy to see him. He purchased some books and Bibles, and we loaded him up with a bunch more. He hands the materials out to students, listeners at the radio station, and anyone else he feels led to share the Good News with.

Men's Retreat

This past weekend I participated in a men's retreat at Laredo Stepping Stone. It was a blessing to see about 15 men - married and single - gather together to study what God's Word has to say about being "real" men.

"Bob"

"Bob" is the homeless man who we've gotten to know quite well during the past several months. He generally visits our ministry at least three or four times a week, has a cup (or two) of coffee, and shares.

We've had a lot of opportunities to talk with "Bob" about Christ, and many other things... Today he attended the worship service at Grace Bible Church with us. Please pray for Bob as he tries to start over, that he would be able to find a job and get established; but especially that he would know the transforming power of God's grace in his life.

Dios provee...

The Lord provides in so many ways. One recent example is Robert Gómez. Robert is volunteering his time a couple of days a week to help organize our inventory a little more precisely and put away new books as they arrive. Robert is bilingual and has had experience working in a library in the past, so he has been a real asset especially in organizing the Spanish books. You can visit Robert's blog at: http://www.ragomez.net/

A day in the life of BRIDGE Ministries of Laredo...

Some of the people we were able to serve yesterday...

A missionary couple that still travels to Nuevo Laredo (across the border from Laredo) to do worship services came in and purchased some materials.

A couple of young missionaries from Northern Mexico came, we gave them with a lot of Spanish and some English books. They are trying to establish a library with Spanish resources and were very appreciative for the books.

A lady purchased some marriage resources for a couple she is helping who are having marriage problems.

A pastor came in looking for materials for a young man he is discipling. The young man will be joining our Saturday AM Bible study group.

Abigail and Alex came in – a wonderful Christian husband and wife. Their parents are missionaries also in Nuevo Laredo and have gotten a lot of materials from us as well as Spanish New Testaments that we have given them.

A couple of local college students came in and bought some Christian books.

Another husband and wife came in to buy resources for their church and themselves.

Mother with several children purchased Spanish materials for their family and ministry – we gave them a case of Spanish New Testaments for their ministry.

Daily we hear from people how thankful they are to finally have these resources in Laredo.

To all of you who pray for and support this ministry - THANK YOU! You are an integral part of this ministry.

A bag of scorpions...

"Twenty years ago you wouldn’t have traded me for a bag of scorpions" – those were the words from Javier, a gentleman who visited our ministry yesterday . I asked him what caused the change in his life and he said it was the Lord. He ended up buying a bilingual Bible from us, and donated an extra $60 towards the ministry. He said he hasn’t been tithing as he should, and wanted to give the money to help our ministry.

Here are a few of the other opportunities the Lord has given us in recent days to be a blessing:

We gave a box of Spanish NT to Rafael – he does evangelism in Nuevo Laredo and was very thankful to have the Bibles. We also gave Spanish Bibles and books to Vincente, Chuy and Junior from the Jacob’s Well Center – a Christian nonprofit that helps the homeless and people with addictions in Laredo. They minister by sharing the Gospel, discipleship, and helping them rejoin society in a productive way (job assistance).

There's also a young hispanic man around 22 or 23 years of age who's a member of a local Spanish Baptist Church who has been buying books by Calvin, a set of commentaries on Isaiah, and several other scholarly tomes. He is just hungry to study God's Word. He considers our ministry a "gold mine", and it has been a blessing to be here for him and others like him.

We had a lady “Sandra” visit us and spend almost $50 on books and Bibles. She exclaimed what a blessing it was to have us here in Laredo.

I also picked up a pallet of books and Bibles recently at the trucking warehouse. While Josh and I were carrying the boxes to the Durango, a Mexican gentleman (I think he probably drives a truck) started a conversation with us. He indicated that it was important to teach our children about God, so I told him what we are doing. It just so happened that the boxes we were moving were Spanish NTs, so I tore open a box and gave him four Bibles for himself and para distribuir (to distribute), he was very excited and immediately gave one to a fellow truck driver.

These are just a few examples of how the Lord has allowed us to minister in this dry and thirsty land - our prayer is that He would be glorified and that many will continue to come to faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.

How's it going?

We have been asked frequently, “How is it going at the BRIDGE?” We are excited about how God is allowing us to minister in the hot, dry city of Laredo. Here is how a “typical” day unfolds…

The whole family comes to work (except Josh who is in Michigan right now). Pastor Nava came in to buy materials for his congregation at Loma Alta. He and Steve are starting a Saturday morning Bible study on the basics of the Christian faith. His wife runs the Laredo Life Center (crisis pregnancy center) and has bought videos, books, and materials for the ladies that come into the center.

Bill, a (semi-homeless) friend that we met last week, came in with his friend Robert. Bill is in the rebuilding stage of his life. He is currently traveling with a bucket and supplies to find work washing cars. He enjoys Steve’s coffee and is thankful for the nice shirts Steve Walters donated. We are thankful that the shirts are long sleeved to cover Bill’s unclad woman tattoo. Anna had baked muffins the day before, so the guys enjoyed coffee (a lot of coffee), muffins, and conversation. Bill went to find some cars to wash and asked us to keep on eye on Robert. Robert is suffering from some health problems and unclear thinking. He was content to read his Bible and draw on paper but then wanted to lie down. He had seen a large piece of cardboard earlier in the day that he wanted to use as a bed. We have many folded down boxes in the back room so he made a pallet of those and took a nap until Bill got back. Bill is supposed to meet us at church this Sunday. During this time other people came into the bookshop. I was glad that people didn’t stare or treat them differently.

An Hispanic woman with her children and mother came to buy supplies for their church and family. We found out her husband is a pastor in Honduras. He is working on legally coming to the U.S. We were able to give her a case of the Dios me Ama Bibles to ship to her husband.

Pastor Roberto and his wife Keena came in to buy resources for themselves and their congregation. Pastor Roberto and Keena have a heart for the destitute in the poor Hispanic communities of Laredo. The last time Roberto was in we gave him a case of Spanish New Testaments. While they were at BRIDGE Ministries on this visit, Roberto related (with tears in his eyes) how he had given some of the Spanish New Testaments to a family of 7 children who are being taken care of by their grandmother (both parents are in prison). He told the children that they needed to take care of the Bibles. Later in the week Roberto said he saw one of the boys reading his Bible, and the boy told him he was ‘taking care’ of his gift. The children are so hungry for love. What better gift to give them than to tell them that they have a Father in Heaven--the Creator of the universe--who loves them unconditionally.

When we aren’t working with people in the bookshop we are sorting, stamping, and pricing books that come in. The Hispanic and Mexican pastors have been so thankful for the wide supply of Christian materials that we have in Spanish. We recently had some people visit from Monterrey, Mexico who were very excited about having a Christian bookstore on the border.

Book Review:
Periodically we’d like to share some thoughts on books that have been especially meaningful to us. This month we’ll review the book RADICAL: Taking Back Your Faith From the American Dream by David Platt.

In this book David discusses the difference between Jesus’ call to discipleship, and what American culture has changed it into. David asks, “[The] crucial question for every professing or potential follower of Jesus [is]: Do we really believe he is worth abandoning everything for? Do you and I really believe that Jesus is so good, so satisfying, and so rewarding that we will leave all we have and all we own and all we are in order to find our fullness in him? Do you and I believe him enough to obey him and to follow him wherever he leads, even when the crowds in our culture—and maybe in our churches—turn the other way?” The author goes on to convey how we have “embraced values and ideas that are common in our culture but are antithetical to the gospel he [Jesus] taught.”

David Platt’s purpose in writing the book is not simply to criticize American Christian culture, but with a pastor’s heart—for that is what he is—David challenges us to listen to the words of Jesus, believe them, and obey them. He summons us to return to a “biblical gospel, because the cost of not doing so is great for our lives, our families, our churches, and the world around us.”

I found this book immensely penetrating. It challenges us (with the Spirit’s incitement) to question whether we are following the Jesus of the Bible, or a comfortable Jesus of our own making. Buy, beg, or borrow a copy and read it—you won’t be able to put it down once you’ve started.

Praise and Prayer:
-We are thankful for Hope House (www.hopehousemx.org) and the Christian influence they continue to have in the lives of abandoned and orphaned boys in Mexico.
-We praise God for the opportunities we’ve had to provide Bibles and evangelical Christian materials to the communities of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
-We are thankful that we were able to see our dear missionary friends the Dutros and St. Clairs.
-We continue to pray for the people and country of Mexico with the violence and darkness that is crippling that nation. May the darkness be exposed and may the people of the Light stand firm in their fight against the enemy.

Dios les bendiga,
Steve, Leigh Ann, Josh, Anna, and Sophie

Books Recycled to Instruct, Disciple, Guide & Educate

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers. ~Charles W. Eliot

Here's your opportunity to recycle those "used" books that are collecting dust on the bookshelf or in the attic! In doing so you can both bless someone with affordable Christian literature, AND help to support the Hope House (www.hopehousemx.org) boys' shelter in Jalisco, Mexico.

In an effort to provide others (who aren’t so blessed as we are) with “wise counselors” and “patient teachers”, we are collecting books for our nonprofit ministry book shop. The goal is to provide good quality used books that can be used to bless and instruct someone else. We are interested in all types of evangelical Christian literature such as books on Christian living, evangelism, family life, counseling, prayer, theology and doctrine, Christian biographies, Bible commentaries and dictionaries, discipleship, etc. We can use books in both English and Spanish.

We are also interested in other types of good literature for children and adults, such as educational books, biographies, classics, American history, and home-school materials.

BRIDGE Ministries of Laredo is a nonprofit ministry dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Laredo, TX and Mexico and equipping missionaries, pastors, and Christian workers with inexpensive Bibles and other Christian literature. Our second purpose is to produce a source of revenue for the Hope House boys' shelter in Mexico (hopehousemx.org), therefore we rely on your generosity and donated books to make this a reality.

If you have any books that you would like to donate, please send them to our collection points in Michigan: Vriesland Reformed Church/DenHartog, 6839 Byron Rd, Zeeland, MI 49464 OR Texas: Steve DenHartog, 317 Grosbeak St, Laredo, TX 78045.

If you have a large inventory of books available (too many to ship), let us know so that we can make arrangements to pick them up.

We are also interested in books that are overstocks from Christian publishers or bookstores, slightly damaged inventory, bulk auctions, etc.

If you have any questions, please email Steve: sdenhartog@me.com or call 956-489-1405.

Below is a list of suggested authors--the list is by no means comprehensive--books from any evangelical Christian authors are appreciated.
